Background Information

Mary O'Malley Borg is the Director of the Honors and Scholars Program and a Professor of Political Economy in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of North Florida. She received her B.A. with Honors in Economics from Randolph-Macon Woman's College and her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since arriving at the University of North Florida in 1984, she has received the University's Outstanding Teacher Award and two TIP awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching. She has published several scholarly papers and a book on the economic consequences of state lotteries.

Mary began the Undergraduate Research Program at the University of North Florida in 1998 and continued to direct it until she became the Director of the Honors Program in January of 2009. At that time, the program was re-named the Collaborative Undergraduate Scholarship Program (CUSP) and merged with the Honors Program to become the Honors and Scholars Program.

Mary (along with Liz Perry) is currently studying the effects of undergraduate research experiences on both liberal learning and critical thinking skills. She has published research (along with Harriet Stranahan) examining the effect of personality type on student learning in economics.
