Summary

The Middle Tennessee State University program aims to attract, engage, and support undergraduate students who are interested in sustainability, including veterans, first-generation college students, and transfer students. The program utilized service learning and infused Earth science across the curriculum to strengthen interdisciplinary ties to sustainability-related issues and to increase relevance of classroom teaching to real-world issues.Learn more about MTSU's Department of Geosciences »

About the Program

***5/4/20. This page is no longer updated. The Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) Environmental Science degree program is now administered by the MTSU Geosciences Department. For the latest, go to MTSU's Department of Geosciences .***

The GeoSustainability project is increasing undergraduate use of sustainability active learning materials at Middle Tennessee State University. The project seeks to recruit and increase the retention of undergraduates who are interested in sustainability and who fit better into Geoscience than other disciplines. MTSU has a relatively high percentage of veterans, first-generation college students, and transfer students, and the MTSU InTeGrate implementation project is keenly interested in working with these students as well as all students interested in sustainability.

We are working toward this objective in three ways:

  • Involving MTSU non-STEM majors in active learning and service learning about sustainability.
  • Helping MTSU faculty mentor and advise students who are preparing themselves for the sustainability workforce by majoring in Geoscience.
  • Connecting MTSU Geosciences students with opportunities to volunteer at the K-12 level.
