Summary

The California State University - Chico team developed a new General Education Sustainability Pathway at the university. An interdisciplinary group of faculty infused Earth science content into courses across the liberal arts curriculum allowing multiple perspectives on issues like climate change and sustainable agriculture practices to be integrated. The faculty worked together as a community of practice to envision how best to align courses from different disciplines into a coherent pathway enabling deep student learning about sustainability from multiple angles.Read more about the

About the Program

The purpose of our project is to create a new path through the General Education curriculum at CSU Chico that will support improved student learning throughout a Sustainability Pathway with the thoughtful incorporation of the InTeGrate curriculum. Specific learning outcomes for individual courses are enhanced by strategically infusing relevant InTeGrate modules. Additional outcomes from the adaptation of InTeGrate curriculum in the Sustainability Pathway include infusing geoscience curriculum across students' GE experience. Perspectives from a Geoscience approach to course material offer breadth throughout the Pathway by exposing students to topics they would not typically encounter in liberal arts courses. Multiple perspectives on issues like climate change and sustainable agriculture practices provide a bridge through a series of courses across several disciplines.

Program Goals

  1. Measurably improve student learning and confidence with InTeGrate curriculum in the Sustainability Pathway
  2. Develop a community of faculty who collaboratively incorporate InTeGrate resources in pathway courses and work together in peer-based professional development.
